Piaggio is one the four largest machine-building companies in the world. It was founded in 1884 in Pontedera, Italy. When it opened, Piaggio manufactured ships, airplanes, and industrial equipment. Nowadays, the company specializes in the production of scooters and motorcycles. This is the largest manufacturer in Europe, and occupies 40% of the European market. They focus on the freedom in everyday life with original and comfortable machines that suit contemporary and active city riders. Piaggio operates 7 subsidiaries.
When Piaggio was founded, they were engineering locomotives. Later they added production of airplanes and bombers. In 1946, Enrico Piaggio, the founder of the company, asked their aircraft engineer Corradino D'Ascanio to create a vehicle that will be affordable and convenient for city living. The engineer made the legendary VESPA scooter. In 1959, new owners gained control over the company – FIAT. In 1964, the aviation subdivision became their own company called Piaggio Aero. In the 1960's, the company purchased the famous manufacturer Gilera. This brought the opportunity to produce scooters with 50 cc engines. During the late 1990's and early 2000's, the company was ready to announce their bankruptcy, but Morgan Grenfell Private Equity a subsidiary of Deutche Bank, purchased them. In 2003, a Milan based holding company IMMSI purchased Piaggio and helped them to become profitable once again. In 2006, Piaggio became a public company.
Piaggio has never participated in any races, because its only focus is mass production.
Piaggio has a number of great models in production, including, the Piaggio VESPA (in Italian it means wasp) scooter. It got the name because of the 2-stroke engine sounds like a flying wasp. Despite the high price, these scooters became popular almost instantly because of their charismatic and high end Italian design. Another great example is the NRG scooter. It has brilliant engineering with a powerful 50 cc engine combined with great breaking and control systems, as well as a unique Italian design. The very first 3-wheeled scooter was produced by Piaggio. The Theis MP3 model has a one of a kind riding technology – 2 wheels up front and 1 in the back. This front wheel suspension guarantees great balance at low speeds and stability at high speeds. This extra security on high speeds is needed because the engines on these scooters can go up to 500 cc and 40 horse power.
Nowadays, Piaggio is introducing some eco-friendly vehicles. They engineer and produce unique hybrid scooters that have zero-emission electric motors. With this engine the scooters can go up to 20 km/hr, which is more than enough for cruising in the city traffic.
All these great companies engineer and produce a number of new vehicles every year. But the only thing that remains the same is that all these machines need maintenance and repairs.
